Over 30 years experience in the construction industry. Since 2001 working as a lawyer primarily in construction litigation. Prior to that, 14 years employed with general contractors as a project manager.
As a lawyer involved with construction litigation, clients have included commercial building owners, residential home owners, architects and designers, general contractors, sub-trades and suppliers; as both plaintiffs and defendants.
Legal work included the registration and perfection of liens, discharge of liens, hold backs, contract disputes over scope of work, extra charges, delay claims, insurance claims, set-off amounts for defective work, work performed by unlicensed trades. Disputes involving excavation, form work, framers, roofers, electricians, plumbers, drywall and finishes.
Participated in the mediation, settlement and resolution of construction disputes with parties at all levels in the construction industry.
Work with general contractors as a project manager included Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) projects, office towers in downtown Toronto, industrial and commercial buildings throughout the GTA, and tenant fit up for commercial office space. Involved with projects on designated historical buildings and familiar with the unique challenges they pose to all participants.
Dealt with tendering, bidding, change orders, revisions, site meetings, inspections, permits, scheduling, accelerations and delays. Work was on both union and non-union projects. The forms of contract included design-build, fixed price, time and materials, and cost plus. Owners included government bodies at federal, provincial and municipal levels; private owners included pension funds, developers and various partnership structures.
